How much different is ice hockey goalie from road hockey goalie? I want to pick up ice hockey but the gear is too costly for me right now but I might be able to get into it in the future.
I play road hockey right now and I may be able to play at high levels. But I would love to get into ice hockey.

I like you already haha. New gear is like christmas all over again. Heres my setup

Koho 590 pads 35" black weave/black weave/ silver weave
Vaughn Velocity blocker white weave/ white weave/ silver weave
Vaughn 5500 Glove white/black weave. I'm buying a Velocity 3 sometime in the next few weeks though. same colors.
Simmons 991 Chest protector
Bauer Vapor XXX pants
Olie 2000 Mask w/ eagle paintjob
Bauer Supreme 7000 skates.
RBK Premier II 6K luongo stick

Yeah. Midget AA is probably varsity level.. Well inbetween AA and Triple here

And to Muzzi, road hockey goalie is so entirely differen't its really not even the same thing. You have to be an AMAZING skater, and be able to predict the play, rather than just react to shots.

I wish I could play ice hockey, and be a goalie. But ice hockey is really expensive where I am, I'm not a good skater (sadly) and since I'm not sure I could get skating down pat I don't want to spend a ton of money on goalie gear. I do know I'm somewhat decent because I used to play street roller hockey (even though that cant compare to ice hockey) but I used to dominate.
Sounds like a lot of fun.

I just got a shut out today. We won 5-0. I had like 25 shots with 3 breakaways.

playwithpride14
10-21-2007, 06:43 PM
Had my first practice today in a WHILE. little rusty.. but still doing work. stopped every breakway. Then this other team came and was like we'll scrimage you, so we had a fun little scrimage, we won 3-1. had about 20 shots on me.

P.S I'm looking for some new shoulder pads. I know I'm not getting the new RBK premire pros.. the ones that cost $400, but anyone have any suggestions?

EastCoastSurf

im gonna jump back in after being off my skates for a year. i have no idea if anything fits anymore. but my set up was,

pads- Simmons matrix 2 -black/white/silver
glove/blocker- Simmons Matrix black/white/siler
helmet- WJD 906
C/A- Simmons 992
pants- CCM blockade
skates- CCM (forget the number, nothing special)

i wish i could afford a new set of anything, but sadly i cant manage to get that much money together, or get my parents to pay for it. so im gonna have to go on a hunt for some new pads since i highly doubt mine fit, and my gloves are just about shot. Im considering spending the money on a pair of Eagle Sentry's, that are the older 12" wide ones, anyone know anything about them? Gloves are my next dilemma, im not even sure what kind to look for.

What's a butterfly goalie? A butterfly is a save not a style.

Also, you realize every single pad out is made for going down into the butterfly as it is the most effective blocking save for lowshots and screens/deflections. The vapor's are very squared and seal alot of holes in your butterfly. That being said, they are terribly made and the stitches comeapart mad fast, plus they look ugly as sin.

As to your early question on some armor... I would get XXX's they are actually the best uppers I have had in a long time. They're a bit bulky so if your not a great skater(Which you should be since your a goalie, but hey I don't know some guys aren't) they will annoy the hell out of you. They take up alot of net and are REALLY protective. They are vapor's though so take care of them or bauers shotty manufacturing standard will catch up with you.

Don't. You get what you pay for, the eagles won't last long and aren't very comfortable after the break in. I demo'd them, thinking eagles reputable for forward/defense worth a try and its a dece price. They were brutal.

Each to his own. They aren't the most durable pads ever, but nothing that a shoemaker can't fix.

Same. I wear the thinner pads out there, cuz i like to skate a bit. I'm actually a very good skater, so if the bauer vapors are too bulky, I don't think i'll get them. Does anyone have experience with RBK chest pads? I'm very curious about these pads. They look like they form to your body rather nicely, exactly what i want.

No, you misunderstood

If your a good skater get the Vapor XXX.

If your a weaker skater get the Rbk's

The Rbk is too minimalistic, I took a few in the collar and that is probably the most pain I've felt in a while.

they make you arms stay in 1 position
its way to stiff
it wont move
you cant get it loose or it'll be even more dysfunctional.

Yep, he used them pretty much ever sense he started. Look at a rookie photo of him and they are the exact pad as now. He just gets them re stuffed and crap. It is like what Irbe did. He used the same pads for almost his entire career, but they were re done every year.

How are they over-hyped?

You come on this forum preaching to us that Velocity's are the best pad out there.

Why? Give me a reason why? Because alot of minor/Junior goalies wear them?

Thats like me saying I like my warrior head because everyone in the MLL uses warrior.

In the NHL the only thing that matters is logo, goalies use what ever pad they want just with different graphics. If you look at Brodeur he isn't using RBK pads, I always thought they were heaton 10's but they are DR's. Forsberg when he first got his bauer sponsorship hated the skates so he put the bauer logo on some graf's.

How come nobody does it with velocities if they are a much higher level than the RBK's.

Because they aren't.

Infact most of the higher level pads have equal protection durability comfortability and weight. It's what ever FEEL you like best. I can guarentee no 2 people like the exact same characterstic in a pad. I wore a Velocity demo of the new Velocities for the 11" change, and I still hate them. They feel like I'm wearing a pillow. They are so thick, heavy and impossible to move in.

I like the RBK's because aslong as your a strong skater you can move fine. They are very thin and light and very stiff. I like a stiff pad. I'm moving the pads are following I don't want a pad to bend to much or I'll lose power in my strides.

So go ahead, give me a reason why the Velocities are the best pad you can buy. Do it.

mnlax9

wow i didnt think it was a big deal.

he asked for opinions so i gave him mine. I use them, love them wont ever go away from vaughns.

But I think you make a lot of good points and I would say that you win the argument.

i like my v's beacuse they are very soft and break in quick, Like the RBk you can move if your a good skater which almost everyone who plays at a high level is a good skater. and by the way if you can skate at all you can skate in velocities its not ahrd unless your a 6 year old. The vaughns are soft and rbk's hard. we disagree.

but hey your right its all about what i like and nobody else will like the same stuff exactly. come to think if it i dont care that you disagree.

I dont like the RBK's because the pad break. You can get 3 break in RBK liek turco has but in stock they have two breaks.

Lets just stop arguing and find a new topic?

I don't know what the rules are like down there, but minor hockey is shifting to NHL rules for equipment. You're better off getting something in the smaller format

ya i thought of that but im still in high school and the chances of me playin after high school are small because lax is my main sport.

what would you suggest in a smaller format?

bionic is way to hard to break in. ive used it for 3 seasons and ive done EVERYTHING to break it but it still will barley close.

i just got back from yet another butt whoopin' we won 8-0 its my 5th shutout of the year....ive only played 11 games

What ever you like. Gloves aren't like pads, once you get to a certain level their all what feels best. Some like a single T glove, others like double t's, although doubles are rare now.

To be honest, I like the new Vaughn Trapper, but I prefer the PII Blocker, rbk makes a hella comfy blocker, it feels like a winterglove. The glove that rbk makes it decent, but the Vaughn is amazing. I forget which model, but Itech has a pretty good glove and it clocks in a bit cheaper than the rbk.

I love velocity's I must say. And they are extremely popular. I think most of the reason that people like them so much is that they can get more modifications to them then a lot of other companies (especially RBK). Personally I believe theres a reason that the Velocity 1,2, and 3 are all mostly the same pad and the reason is that it works.

The best glove and blocker are definetly the summits, great flexibility and protection

R8s owns the summits, vaughn owns the summits, and bauer owns the summits. summits isnt that good. i tried on all of the above and the summits were the worst besides RBKs.

12-8 ya we moved up a divsion and since my D are day dreaming about paris hilton on the ice i cant really do any thing when theres always a back door man. plus at least 6 goals my defenders have eithr put in or tipped it in. right now im not a happy man.

any tips for breaking in new gloves?

playwithpride14

I know how you feel man. I tell my D to watch the backside all the time and they dont listen to me.

Tip to break in that glove- bring it into the bathroom w/ you when you go to take a hot shower, leave it to hang up somehwere in the room and when oyu get out and dried and stuff put the glove on and just open and close it.

NO!

That's really hard on the leather. It will get all hard and gross.

Just put a nestle's quik can init and tie it shut at night. And do 500 reps of open close. Most gloves come nearly broken in anyways

The back up goalie on our team got a new mask the other day custom painted form toronto for $500 and I was wonderign who else has a custom helemt? if not completely, did you put anything on it that makes it unique?

His mask- red brick wall background with our mascot a mounted scarlet knight busting through the front with our school initials MH on the bottom

My mask- I use the brodeur mask. on the back i have the American flag, each year I won this tournament my old team entered, and my girlfriend's initials

Hey I'm looking for new leg pads still and my frist choice was going to be the RBK turco pads, but I haven't found them anywhere for intermediate size yet. I was wondering if anyone can tell me how these pads are:http://www.donsimmons.com/ice_hockey_goalie_equipment_item.php?id=812&menu=int they were alwaysmy second choice so I'm looking for some input on them. Thanks guys.

I am getting some Itech Vamps 4.8. Anyone know anything about em? I am getting the pads (34"), matching blocker and catcher for 200 which I think is an excellent deal.

No I actually like a tighter fit. Right now I'm wearing TPS Bionics. they're pretty old and way too small now. All I've ever used is TPS for leg pads and I like the way the R8s seem, has anyone ever played with them? i've only seen them.
