View Full Version : GOTTA CHOOSE A CAR

My parents said that if I work and earn money to pay for some of the car, and get good grades all year they will buy me a car. I made a thread a while back on STI vs 05 Mustang Gt. I couldn't find anything off google that was really specific, can anyone tell me how much it would be for a teen driving an STI, Mustang Gt, or Acura TL? I've been told that Mustang GT insurance and Acura TL insurance aren't too bad.
Anyway,
the choices are...
STI(depending on insurance, but the last of my choices RICER is an annoying nickname as well, even if it is more of a rally car haha.)
-good handling
-fun to drive
05 Mustang GT
-really nice deep sound
-fast
-nice interior
Acura TL(my dad likes Acuras)
http://www.dragtimes.com/images/9647-2004-Acura-TL.jpg
I think if I got a TL then I would make it like that, black with chrome or black on black and it would look really pimped out and probably a system, yet still really fast 290 or so HP.
Mustang SVT Cobra?
found some pretty cheap around here with pretty low mileage...but not sure about insurance as well
I don't know I just want people's input on the TL mainly, I got what I needed for STI/Stang. But opinions and experiences with any of the three cars is cool.
Thanks.

if you get any of these cars, i truly hope that you learn to drive standard. it seems pointless to buy a sports car and drive auto...blah

my mom has a TL and it is like a BMW quality car (looks kind of like 1 too)
one thing though, mustang=gas=pricey

yea my dad used to drive stick and he enjoyed it a lot so he doesnt mind if i get stick, i dislike auto
yea TL is really nice looking, i was also thinking about that for the stang cause the v8 haha
so far talkin with my parents and stuff it looks like its goin to be the TL and put some rims and a system on it =) but keep em coming

uh the insurance on any of these cars will be through the roof for a new teenage boy driver....
my older brother(19) has a tl..i really like it..i think i am going to get an is though..you may want to look into an rsx..idk...kinda slow but nice looking.

my friend has an RL black it looks really nice as well, black and it looks like a mafia car haha

im not sure on the numbers but you can always try going on insurance websites and getting quotes or calling for quotes, thats the best way to figure it out. but they're all going to be close to each other. the acura would probably be the lowest i think. the STI and mustang are considered sports cars to insurance companies so they tend to get you on that, but im not 100% sure on the Acura
laxgoalie66
09-12-2007, 03:40 PM
yea i was thinkin the Acura is a sedan. but i'll check it out. and i figured acura would be the lowest just because yea, but i had been told that mustangs dont count for sports car insurance for some reason but i guess not.
if i could, i would get the svt cobra in a second.

As recommended above, a G35 is a truly amazing luxury PERFORMANCE car. My family owns a sedan and its boasts something like 293 3.5 liter V-6. No offense to you. But you don't deserve a G35. It's to fast. With rising insurance prices at the age group of 16-19 that could be extremely high. And with the death rate rising you should be thinking safety.
But what am I doing. Being a 15 year old parent...sikeeee.
An STI is a nice car that is very fast but its rally inspired and theres no need for that unless you think your going to rally?
A mustang...Everyone and their grandma has em'...seriously my 84 year old grandma has an 07 convertible.
TL's. Theres one in my school parking-lot. Very nice, It's a slate gray color and it has dark silver alloy wheels, Masked headlights and tail lights. And its also a luxury performance sedan.
Also in my opinion look at a Volvo S40.

I always felt that if you don't plan on speeding unnecessarily, than "fast," shouldn't play a huge role in your car. IMO, I'll take looks and a nice interior over a car that can blow by another.
laxgoalie66
09-12-2007, 04:34 PM
haha grandmas dont have the strips and a new front end, and maybe an exhaust? haha i hate convertibles... but anyway the volvo s40 is nice but im not a fan of the mazda's
and im lookin for a pretty fast car to drive and a nice one inside...the TL for example =)
the g35 is indeed a very very nice car, but thats what a good friend of mine wasn't able to get and hes wanted it for years and he would hate me if i got it, plus isnt it only a two seater? either way i wouldnt get it even though its incredibly nice
bleh i want a cobra..

Sedan is a 5 seater 4 door. The coupe is a 2 door with still 4 seats. We had a coupe but my mom returned it for the sedan. Out of all those cars the G35 is the most luxorious.

Heres something to compare to. My 2000 ford contour with a 4 cylinder is 2100 a year to insure. An SE-R sentra wouldve been 3700.
I'm betting your Mustang or STI or TL is around 4000 a year, which is ridiculous. It's your first car, you'll probably run it into a pole or something, so don't go blowing wads of cash on some nice ride.
laxgoalie66
09-12-2007, 05:35 PM
thanks for the help wslax
I think STI is pretty much out of the choices, the TL and Mustang a maybe. TL is a bit more pricy, but I want it more than a Mustang because it would be more comfortable to have four doors than two, also can look a lot nicer. Custom you sayin i'm a bad driver? :P
BTW
I'm looking for feedback on the cars, and approximate insurance rates. Not whether I should get another car/fast car or not. I'll be paying for all if not most of the insurance anyway, I worked alot this past summer and have quite a bit of cash.

i have an 07' Nissan Altima and its really really nice i got it base so it was not extremely expensive it is a great car, i would look into the coupe too it looks really nice you can get it in a 4 cylinder or a V6 i have the 4 and its more than enough power for me even going on the highway, its acceleration is great and i absolutely LOVE the CVT.

I don't mean to call you out...but...i dont think you know what your talking about...a stock WRI will smoke a stock G35 coupe or sedan 99/100 times. the G35 really isn't a fast car..its actually pretty equal to the TL as far as spped goes...i'm not saying that it's as slow as say..a Civic..but it is by no mean fast. those #'s i bolded for you don't mean much...go on any car forum and you will see what i'm talking about.

I can't do the insurance quote stuff, cause you need like social security number and like insurance policy stuff and my dad is paranoid about giving stuff out. But I would think TL is lower cause its sedan.

you are very right. it is one of my favorites.
i dont think that insurance rates ar going to be much different on what car you get...a teen boys insurance will be around the same..no matter what company or car you have...of course a ferrari would be more than a civic..but not much else is going to impact the price very much...if you get good grades it can be lowered a little...also *ineresting fact* the insurance for a sports car in red is higher than insurance for one in say..white.

God I wish I was rich enough to be a spoiled little teenage driver, driving cars that are, IMO, too expensive/fast/dangerous for a teenage driver. The insurance is gonna be killer, and chances are you're gonna total your first car anyway...
As already stated, you don't need a fast car. Unless you're trying to make up for something... just buy an old beater and live like a real teenager.
I beleive brown is actually the most expensive car colour to own or at least the most likely to be involved in an accident.
laxgoalie66
09-12-2007, 07:12 PM
Yeah, a friend of mine got a TSX in red...and then found out that insurance was more.. Thanks ESPN.
Talent--Did anyone say I was gettin these? I was looking around because we have a car to trade in plus i will be paying for a portion of the car. And I am not rich, not poor, but not rich. SVT Cobra/Mustang GT/ and STI are pretty much not a choice anymore, well maybe the GT, and TL isnt that fast, but decent. Also, how do you know I'm going to total my first car? I could be a better driver than you for all you know.
Paulvilax24
09-12-2007, 07:17 PM
A good driver doesn't count for everything. You have to be able to react to other people maneuvers. A TL by all means is a fast car. Any car with an engine has the potential to be a fast car. 50 around a turn with a tree that you cant see is still 50 in a Camry. Be responsible. Don't let the thrill of going fast kill you. Trust me, I've been in a car doing 120 and its cool while its happening. Then you slow down back to the pace of regular traffic and realize wow...why would I do that.
laxgoalie66
09-12-2007, 07:18 PM
It being fast is just my choice, nobody said I was goin to street race or anything, i just like power. TL isn't even that fast anyway. This car will also last me from now, through college and maybe after. And as for being a real teenager... I don't know about your area, but at my school and nearby schools there's a lot nicer cars than an Acura or a Ford. BMWs, Mercedes, Range Rovers, it's ridiculous. So I'm actually Jeeps, Acuras, Toyotas, Subarus, and etc are pretty common, and i'm pretty 'real' thanks.
Anyway, I'm looking for help, not people telling me I shouldn't get this or that, as I already stated.
laxgoalie89
09-12-2007, 07:19 PM
yeah i wouldnt get a new car...get something used (not used so it brakes down everytime) and cheaper, and insurance will be cheaper too and if something happens to it, it wont be as bad as new car. plus you're a teenager, we don't deserve new cars lol
i have my licence for like 4months now and got no car, have to pay all so i say anything with four wheels and motor that runs is good lol
laxgoalie66
09-12-2007, 07:20 PM
Haha, Paul my dad's told me the exact thing.
But what am I doing. Being a 15 year old parent...sikeeee.
Hahah, I thought that was funny.
Anyway, yeah I know about the reaction thing to other's maneuvers. But I wouldn't exactly speed or go fast as I can for the thrill, I don't want to die or get injured, or get a ticket and get my car taken away =)

Sounds like you live in a pretty upscale area. Where I'm from is a beach resort and we still drive 95 nissan frontiers and other beaters like that. I've never really seen anyone who got a nice new car treat it right. The older cars are in better shape than the newer ones because as teenagers we don't know how to take care of our things. You can check geico.com for any quote, just lie and say you are 18.

Thanks, yea, most kids drive their parents 2-3 year old cars. Minus a few who get brand new 08 BMW's and 07 Mercedes... but other than that most of them are cars I wouldnt mind driving...Wranglers, Grand Cherokees, Camrys, Accords, TSX, RSX, an RX 8, and lots of everyday cars. We get made fun of for being the stuck up rich school, it's annoying.
laxgoalie66-
i also have a similar choice of cars like you..right now i have 8,000 saved up..my parents will pay 8,000 plus insurance and then my grandparents will cover the rest if i get a more expensive car..so its not like i am being spoiled and just handed a nice car..i have worked for the past 3 years..right now it is pretty much between a used RSX, my moms 05 navigator, a used lexus IS(prolly not), an rx8, or pretty much any honda(next door neighbor/family friend owns like 3 honda dealerships. my brothers got a tl but he had my moms old old navi from like 2002 for about 2 years, my sister got an 07 accord as her first car(leased). i am leaning towards the rsx..even though it isnt really fast, i just like the way it looks. btw..i wont be getting one for about 6 months anyway so i have some time to decide.

first:how old are you?
second:where are you driving?
third: you driving skills for manual driving(do you stall a alot, have problems on hills)
four: are you really ready for the insurance cost of these cars
five: are you responsible enough for these cars
Ill break each car down for you since I myself was in your shoes not to long ago
Subaru WRX STI- Insurance for a male under 20 years old will most likly be 2500-3000 a year depending on where you live.
one of the safest cars on the road.I was in a 50mph crash in a wrx where the car flipped and rolled and me and the other kid were unharmed not even scratched. By far the safest car on the list
AWD will help your cause as well as it being down as a 4 door saloon.
how ever this car has now been labeled as your street racer poster car
3 years ago you could get away with the car because it was new.
also you can find used ones for ALOT less a new STI will cost you about 33k or more. the new ones are nice but the only big changes are the interior.
the motors are pretty strong(mine just went but i was pushing 400whp and had 27 pounds of boost running on it)
great car but a 05 WRX is also a great choice and is NO slouch
GT- good cars i wouldnt say they are fast by any means. only thing looked at worse in the domestic world is the baseline mustang
ok cars but really dont live up to the hype. personally I hate them and am really happy I didnt get one. WIll also have a high insurance on the car since its the *sportier mustang*
TL- good car all around cant go wrong with it enjoy your 180K+ on your motor those things are built really well. wont break the bank insurance wise
SVT cobra- Insurance will be the most out of all. 2 door, rwd monster production car. scary fast stock easy to make a monster out of them with a few bucks. This car takes A LOT of skill to drive, under rated from the factory this car super charged from the factory. If you can find one with good milage that isnt a wrecked car good luck . i have known several people with this car and they cant drive it in anything but warm sunny days even then the wheels still chirp into third if you aren't careful. how ever it is still one of the best handling cars out. Its a shame they didnt keep making the stang' like these they were really awesome
your parents would be madmen to put you in this car to be honest with you.
but good luck
To sum things up
your best bet for everyone is a wrx 05 and on. they have a 2.5L boxer engine almost the same as the STI just a few minor differences to insure them WAY cheaper than most of your listings. they are def not slow and handle great and you can get 300whp with just a few bolt ons.
I has a wrx for 2 years then sadly got in a accident and totaled it but got enough from the WRX part out for my used STi
WRX wagons are really alot of fun and are the same as sedans but with a hatch for your stuff.
if you are set on those cars though
go with the STI its your best bet at the moment consitering ALL things (speed, handling, insurance,SAFTY,"street credit", Automotive credit, driving fun and all that good stuff)
hope this helped feel free to get at me with any questions

also through my skimmings i see that you think a mustang is a smooth riding car
far from it
also as your first car you should not be in any of those cars
what about a nice SAAB (first car was my dads 02 9-3 turbo) they drive extremely well. they arent slow(not that you need speed at your age) and are very safe
and very very easy and very very fun to drive
they have been called the "poor" mans BMW
something to think about
I know alot of kids who got their "Dream car" as there first ride and then crashed it later on. its just how it goes your a new driver your are going to ding/crash/wreck the car. Thank god my parents didn't get me a STI off the bat other wise i am sure i would be dead as i went through my StReEt RaCeR phase early and fast. I would recommend staying away from fast stuff to you grow up a bit and learn from everyone else you know making stupid decisions
best of luck and I pray to god you(or any 17-18 year old) dont get behind the wheel of a cobra or even the Sti ever

Why not get a car that won't cost your parents a whole lot to purchase and won't cost an arm and a leg in insurance.
Something like a small pick up truck, nice used Jeep (I love mine), Subaru Forester/Outback etc.
I realize that you're probably new to the whole car scene, but once you, an under 25 year old male, get your license, your parent's and your insurance jumps sky high.
The cheaper the car, the less you pay for insurance.
The sports car might get the, "ooohs and ahhhhs", but YOUR parents will pay for it through their butts so you can maybe pick up some high school floozy jail bait girls.
Wait until you're older to buy a nice car. High schoolers who get good cars end up having them scraped, dented and damaged by other morons who drive in the school parking lots.
You don't need to impress anyone in high school except for potential colleges. High school isn't where its at. College is where its at. High school popularity is for small timers who aren't going to go anywhere, so they might have the cars, the girls and the varsity letter jackets, but 4 years later, you have a college degree and plenty of job opportunities and they have squat.
When you get done with college, those kids will be changing the tires on YOUR Mustang, while they drive around the dented, scraped and damaged "cool" car they had in high school.
Wait to get your cool car and make due with something that won't break your back paying for it. Work to live, not live to work. You don't want to have to keep paying off a dented, damaged and scraped up car when you are 25...not worth it.

I will have to disagree with you here. If it has 4 seats and 2 doors then it is just a coupe. If it has 2 seats then its a sports car.
I always thought a Ferrari is are super car.
What Ferrari has 4 seats?
Congrats on the promotion to moderator.

Hdg- I wouldn't drive it because i dont deserve such a car. And I don't/won't/shouldn't drive anything better than my parents.

Yes, a ferrari is a super car. I always thought about it the other way. A coupe = 2 door 2 seater. Although thats wrong. A camaro and a mustang are sports cars... well muscle but are still sports cars.
And the 612 Scaglietti is a 4 seater I believe.

Yeah goalie33, Hdg cause you guys know what my parents drive. And as I said STI and Cobra are not choices anymore. Thanks for all your help, nobody said i was gettin them guys. Just cars I thought were nice and found cheap in my area so that's that and I don't care what you think I deserve or what you think is too good or too bad. I asked for help choosing a car people, nobody said I was buying it but I just needed to talk to my parents about getting one soon and I was lookin at the ones I would want to drive. Maybe you should try helping instead of instead of saying 'you dont deserve that' and as i said the Cobra and Mustang were taken off the list of choices.
I'm probably goin to try for the TL or a Grand Cherokee. I'll update this once I find out.

Chill buddy. We were just informing you that those cars are nicer/better than an Acura.
Sense it seems that your family has money, get the SRT8 Grand Cherokee. Its a beast.
Also, I really hope you are not like most of the kids I have met that drive cars like that. They are usually snobby people. Just keep it real and don't let your money go to your head.

In all honestly I think it's all opinion. I haven't found a real definition so we are both right. FOR NOW. lol

My fault, just gettin aggravated haha. No I'm not snobby or spoiled which you guys might think. Not rich either, my parents just have to use less money on their kids (I'm an only child) than most people with 2-3 kids. So there is a little extra cash i'm allowed to spend on a car. I'll check out the SRT8. THanks.

Not to be an "meany", but if your parents drive something nicer than an Acura TL than you might be rich, or damn close

Opinions are like butts. Everyone has one, but they all stink.
Its a sports car. Ask any Ferrari dealer and they'll tell you that. It certainly ain't no soccer mom car.:nut:
