Ok guys. The season is almost about to start and I cant wait.
Lets here those predictions and someone should post the scores every day.
I have high hopes for the Blues as usual. I think with the big roster changes and having a good coach at the start of the season, we can make the playoffs.
The Blues have the goal tending when Manny is on his game and we have the scorers and defense. There is no reason why we wouldn't do good this year and get back on track.
Your thoughts.

Leafs win the cup. (10)
Pheonix has some really good goaltending. I think they will make a push for the playoffs if they can get some goal scoring. Go Telly!
Toronto has a chance at making the playoffs. First round exist though. They have a really good tandem in Raycroft and Toskala. Lets hope that they will be able to win big games this year.

Part of me wants to say the Sabres, since there near my hometown, byt they gave up too much power this year, and kept guys that IMO are very over rated like Afinegenov. They needed to try and keep either briere or drury. I have faith in the farm club though, bringing up some horses. My other team is the bruins, and even with the 6 foot 7 giant they won't go anywhere.

hence the word young, which often means little to none expirence.
the bruins have a good goalie this year that they stole from the wild , manny fernandez. Also anybody besides me think the bruins should trade Zdeno? hes great, but we need more solid players. And they have a new coach, so who knows what will happen.
The red wings seemed very hot last year, so they''l have yet another great season. by the way,has chris chelios retired yet?

The penguins will win the cup, or at least get to the cup finals. I have no doubt about that. Other than that, I am gonna throw it out there that the flyers are gonna be 100x better that last year. One of the best offseason's for them in recent history. I say they go deep into the playoffs. They just need a goalie who isn't butt.

They have good players but they wont get to the finals. When you have a 19 year old captain that has been in the NHL for a couple years, you have a problem.

HUGE Caps fan. Ovechkin is easily the most exciting player in the league. Its too bad he doesnt get to pass it around to good players and bump up his assists like Crosby. At least him, Semin, and Backstrom are going to come along this season. The new jerseys are hot too.

My leafs are going to be good this year i think. Sundin+Blake are going to get lots of goals this year. Along with Kyle wellwood who is young and talented. O and Tomas Kaberle, he is nasty. But we need are goaltending to stay consistent, if not, we could have a similar season of the last 2 years

No, the Penguins will get into the finals unless they suffer heavy losses from injury. They have too many young, strong players that have been trained for the new NHL. They have so much depth. Every game I watched of theirs last year you had guys from every line scoring. Granted Crosby is amazing, and has most of their points, they are still a strong, and good team.
Also please note this is coming from someone who hates Crosby, and really the Penguins. C'mon they are major rivals with the Flyers. You just can't not recognize that they are going to go far this year.
And since when did the Bruins get Fernandez? I haven't been keeping up on any pro teams for a while. Can't wait for fantasy to start

It doesn't matter who lead the league in points. The only thing that means is that you you have a high point leader.
He took them out of the gutter? He played a part in it but it wasn't just him. The team also has M-A Fleury, Malkin, and Staal which are all very good young players in the public eye. Also, his rookie year they were like in second to last place so it took more than a year.
He is to young to b a captain. He may have the skill but he doesn't have the experience yet.
No body will ever touch Gretzkys numbers.
Finally, Ovechkin is better then Crosby. Lets here your argument now.

hahaha the next gretzky yea right. Gretzky played in a time when the NHL was flourishing and the talent was at a whole nother level crosby plays in an un popular (no offense to all of you but it is the least watched pro sport of the main ones) and relatively less talented league. While there may be some good players, much of them are past their prime

I don't think anyone can disagree that the Rangers are loaded this year. They've got a great bunch of young guys (lundquist, prucha, jessiman, montoya, etc). With their offseason acquisitions along with the players they retained (jagr, shanny, drury, gomes, the list goes on), they should definately go far. The problem is this can be said about just about any ranger team in the last 15 years. It should be a good year for the blueshirts, with a deep run into the playoffs this year I think.

Crosby: In 160 GP in 2 seasons-- 75 G, 147 A, 222 Pts, +9, has been to the playoffs.
Ovechkin: In 163 GP in 2 Seasons-- 98 G, 100 A, 198 Pts, -17, has not been to the playoffs.
Crosby>Ovechkin
And you are right the points aren't all that matter. The playoffs are. I'm sick of hearing about Ovechkin and his stupid visor and unibrow.

You should try to find numbers on hits to.
Ovechkin is an all around player. Hits, scores, passes, and moves like none other.
Alfredsson was once asked a question. Who do you think is better? Crosby or Ovechkin?
"Ovechkin because he doesn't cry when he gets hit."
What does a visor and unibrow have to do with anything?
Also, who was there to help Ovechkin other than Zubrus? No body. Now its just Ovechkin because they traded Zubrus.
Crosby has... Staal, Whitney, Malkin, Fluery, and Gonchar.
Playoffs matter to a certain extent. You can come in there in your first year as a team and win it. Like the 1996 Avs. And you can not win a cup within 25 consecutive years of being in the playoffs. Like the Blues. There is one thing all the cup winning teams have in common. They all have experience in the game and a bunch of people who has come so close to winning that cup they can just feel it in there hands as the other team lifts it in there tears of sadness.
To sum it all up. If the Pens win the cup, you can punch me right in the balls.

Sure they might make the playoffs but a run for the cup is out of the question.
I know you don't like Ovechkin but the whole thing of not being in the playoffs isn't his fault. One man can't carry a team to the playoffs. And one playoff trip isn't something gloat about. When they hit 10. Then you can gloat.

stop talking about the pens. they arent very good considering theres more than just offense in hockey.. they have good offensive power ya we all know sidney crosby, evgeni malkin, recchi, malone
. look at defense there best defensman is darryl sydor who is a 37 years old which iss way to old for a defensmean. They have marc eaton, not good at all. and then goaltending. Marc andre fleury is very very very very X10 inconsistent.

Really? Because I remember them finishing dead last in the entire NHL. Big whoop they got one good player (Briere). But, this is very similar to when the acquired Forsberg and remember where that got them? That's right, no where.

The suspension would actually be effective if the guy had enough talent to make an NHL team. Sadly, he won't and he may have permeantly tainted a veteran NHLer's career (with the 2 concussions in a row and all, it can only lead to more).
By the way, check out some other Steve Downie vids on YouTube. This guy is the dirtiest player, a total nut-job.

they also have a very strong young core, specifically carter, richards, umberger, hartnell, upshall, potulny, lupol, kukkonen, coburn, and jones. these are all guys who are 26 or under and in their first couple years in the league and only getting better. their main problems last year were a lack of veteran leadership and experience, and some problems on offense.

brandon, your not a sens fan at all are you?
If you look at all the messed up things that have happened in downioes personal life, you get a clearer picture of why he plays the way he does. He has way more talent then either of the sens "tough guys"combined. The windsor incident, that kid was had been trouble since bantam. As far as the suspension, you try and say thats as bad as the bretuzi incident, even with sens coloured glasses on you wont be able to.
anyway leafs finish 11th on the east, and pogge ends up being the best tender.
You've figured out I'm a Sens fan this late? You must be part of Leafs nation then :chuckle:
I'm not saying it was the dirtiest hit of all time at all (and the Bertuzzi hit was obviously much worse). All I'm saying is that it was a shame that a guy with little talent just screwed an NHL vet who now might have concussion problems (getting them easier as he gets more, eventually ending his career). I know I'm just making assumptions but many NHLers do go down the concussion alley, never to be the same again (Eric Lindros).
And you can't say you'd trade Chris Neil for Downie.

So, according to LaxGoalieKing, pathetically taking out a player doesn't warrant 20 games? It does. It very much does. Those kind of hits aren't in the least bit tolerated. How rarely do you see someone elbow someone whose in front of them? There is nothing but malicious intent when you elbow they guys in front of you. You're elbow can be accidentally used if someone is behind you, and you raise it too early. But sticking your elbow out in front of you means you're doing your best to hurt this guy.
The way Downie elbowed McCammond is on the same level as Chris Simon's hit. It was pathetic, it was absolutely blatant, it was done by a mediocre player whose never going to amount to much else in the league, and it displayed absolutely no room for accident whatsoever. To say so otherwise is foolish.

Im just saying that Roberto Luongo is in the NHL along with Mikka Kippursoff
Not saying he didnt deserve a suspension but 20! try 3, 5 at the max!
Exactly. It was a body check that went a little too high. There was no intent for sirius injury, when you hit somebody you want to knock them over, injuring them is just an added bonus. Scott Stevens layed several worse hits then that and the longest suspenion he ever received was less then 10 games. What the NHL is saying by giving Downie a 20-game suspension is that his hit is just as bad as Bertuzzi's and that's just asinine.

Anytime you bring in that many new players it takes a while to gell. It could take the first 20 games and by that time it might be to late. Thats why i dont have high hopes on the islanders, nor should I.

For the anatomy challenged, the elbow is on the BACK of the arm. In order to hit someone in front of you with said body part, you would have to make an extremely conscious effort to do so. ya I'll tell you what I'm actually another one that is pretty high on the Pens this year. Their biggest question mark is in goal, if Fluery can give them championship type goaltending they honestly could go to the finals this year, but he is very inconsistant and I don't know if he can pull some games out for them in the playoffs. He is very good but I don't think he is a championship type goalie.
Their three centers of crosbey, malkin and staal is retarded, I think malkin is going to be a 50+ goal scorer this year and the signing of sykora should turn out to be a good one. He's going to play RW on crosbey's line and might be the finisher crosbey has been waiting for, the Pens have never had a guy that could play with crosbey yet. With the talent they have on the roster they have the potential to be very good and if they do get that championship type of goaltending this team really could be a dynasty over the next 5-7 years. But I'm going to say they lose in the semi's this year.

and i mostly agree with meade about downie. just one thing though, i dont think he was going in with the mindset that "i dont think im that good so im just gonna go hurt this guy". i think he knew he needed to show the coaches that he can play, he wanted to get one of those sportscenter top ten hits, but it just got a little out of hand. its only 20 games and he is still a young guy and could easily turn it around and get back in the NHL

1.) he won 47 games last year
2.) 2.27 gaa last year with some of the worst defense in nhl
3.) .921 save pct. ( does that need explaing)
4.) carrer goals against 2.63
5.) two time all star at age 27
47 games is great. Brodeur had 48.
2.27 is also good. Brodeur had 2.18.
.921 save pct is good. Brodeur had 9.22, it's almost exact....
Career goals against of 2.63, well thats ok, Brodeur's is 2.20.
He also holds the record for most 30+ win seasons in a row, and most 40+ win seasons.
But brodeur had 12 SO's last year... has a Calder, 4 Jennings, and 2 Vezinas. Not to mention his stanley cups.
I rest my case.

i cheer for the leafs and like every leaf fan, i think they suck.
Luongo played for the florida panthers...........i rest my case.
He deserved to win mvp last year but some wimp named sydney got it. Really he has done the most with absolute crap, Unlike brouder he has never played a team that set up a defence wall in front of him. Instead he had 5 pilons in florida and some weak swedish twins in vancouver. I believe luongo has faced the most 60+ shot games. Brouder's numbers look good beacuse the most shots he has faced isnt even 40, even then 60% of those are dump ins due to teh trap. Luongo also doesnt allow weak goals, Brouder does, and often in big games( stanley cup final jersey vs. dallas, mike madano shot from well beyond 20 feet easily breezes through merty's five hole). Luongo Is the future of hockey and has been since he was drafted as an islander, no one really knew it because he played for such a craptastic team. But alas they are both Canadians and everyone knows Canada( espeacily Quebec) Produces the best tenders. With the exception of a few guys European goaltenders have a life span not unlike the fruit fly, here today, gone tommorow.
Meade- Its cool how you know where the elbow is, it would be even cooler if you knew how to use it. Leave the real hockey talk up to the real hockey people. Hockey is a working mans game, Knowing big words only counts against you. BTW, How many other potential less kids played for team canada junior team(AKA the greatest team in the world)? Compare that number that of team USA, then call steve downie potential less. Calling Downie mediocre compared to mccamond is wrong considering mccamond along with the 2nd 3rd and 4th lines of the senators are nothing but mediocre players. Speaking of elbows i'd love to talk a look at the Cheap shot given by the team US defence men on downie AFTER team canada scored.
In other news hockey was declared dead in the US at the first intermisson of red wings home opener, where the Joe sat close to 1/3rd empty. If "hockeytown, US" can't sell the game how will nashville, atlanta, both florida teams, sanjose, anihiem, LA, and carolina survive?
also a great quote here by an unknown man on the recent years of teh game. "You can tell hockey is the great sport it is, solely on the fact it has survived All the bad things done unto it by the NHL"

A- I very much agree with you on the Luongo part.
B- Do not misconstrue my comment on Downie. If you want to become ignorant and make this a Canada vs. USA thread, by all means, have fun. I'll take no part in it. If using big words confuses you, ask someone to translate, because I don't feel the need to steep to your level.
I didn't see that hit that said US defenseman laid, but if it was cheap and very dirty, then I'll agree with you. If you have the Youtube link, PLEASE post it.
I said Downie was a player with no future- I didn't say the entire Canadian team was potential-less. If you'd like to pretend I said that just so you can bust out your "[no profanity] American Hockey, GO CANADA," then I hope you have fun, but make sure you realize that I never said anything like that.
If you think that Hockey in America is dead, and you have the stats to back it up, then I won't disagree with you. But once again, do not make my post out to be an Anti-Canadian post, because its far from it.
i am hardcore wild fan. what made you think caps?
is it cause of niklas backstrom? he his minneostas goalie.
last year
22-8-3
1.97 GAA
.934 save percentage
5 shutouts
My mistake, I assumed you mean the Caps Niklas Backstrom. Thats why I thought you were either a Caps and Wild fan, or just a Wild fan as well as a Backstrom fan.
I'm sorry but there was no elbow in the Downie hit. It was like shoulder/hip on shoulder/hip. And i am pretty sure people care a lot about Junior hockey. i wonder where all the good players in the NHL come from....? WHL, which is junior...durrrr...!
A- There was plenty of elbow. His shoulder when high, and his elbow popped out. There was absolutely no hip involved.
Thats wonderful that the WHL is good at producing NHL talent. That doesn't mean anybody cares about it. Last time I checked, networks don't feel the need to televise the WHL. Durrr!

Downie... no future? Hahahaha. He has a big future in the NHL, if the league would stop trying to punish every amazing hit that happens. The NHL is trying to turn hockey into an American friendly spectator sport. Basically they are wussifying the league to appeal to Americans.
Hockey in America is not dead but it is hanging onto it's only lifeline, Minnesota/North Dakota. But how come almost every American Franchise is losing money consistently every year? There are 10 too many teams in the NHL, all of which are in places in the USA where hockey is not the dominant sport. Last year, (Anaheim) they interviewed people before the Stanley Cup game, and 9/10 interviewed said they weren't going to watch the game because it didn't matter. One guy said he was going surfing instead, another said he was going to go rent a movie... uhhh.....what? Yeah hockey is dead in the USA, south of Minnesota. In fact Minnesota is so unlike the rest of America, it is really more Canadian than anything.
Plenty of Elbow on the Downie hit...? absolutely not.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=322zqTkL0-c
The only elbow contact was after they were both in the air and on the way towards the ground. Albeit, Downie did jump a little and could have been sent to the box with either boarding or charging ,considering he came from center ice. Maybe even intent to injure, but 20 game suspension is an absolute outrage. Hits like that are part of the game. Nobody was all uptight about hits like that when he was doing it to the Russians or Americans at WJHC. People were even applauding it. It was an amazing hit. Period. Don't get me wrong though, Downie is an absolute [no profanity] disturber. Fighting in practice, you name it, yelling at refs, whatever... he is a jerk.
Your statement on the WHL is completely untrue. Maybe in the USA they don't televise WHL. Which goes to show you that the sport isn't very important and hockey must be dead in america if they can't support it. In Canada several stations televise it, Sportsnet does all the time. Every Oil Kings, Hitmen, Red deer, Medicine hat, Lloydminister, all the games are televised. ShawTV televise every Wheat kings game. Almost every local station shows the closest teams home games. Trust me, there is coverage.
Durrrr... there only isn't coverage where the market won't support it, so if there isn't coverage near you, apparently hockey is dead where you live.
And don't try to say "it's cause we don't have a team", Because if you don't have a team, there is a reason.... oh yeah, you can't support even a junior team? hockey must be dying in the states.

Quit flaming and attacking each other. We're here to discuss hockey and what the scores are, not the competency of someone based on their opinion. Otherwise this thread will be closed until you can chill out.

I was watching the Sens/Rangers game last night and on Coaches Corner, King Don said it was a dirty hit and Downie should have received 30 games.
Now, I'm not some mindless follower but most of the nation is (especially with Don Cherry) so I'd say if 70+ year old Don Cherry (who played and coached old school hockey) thinks it's a dirty hit then it's a dirty hit.
I do however agree that hockey is dying quickly in the States. I don't understand why there still aren't any more Canadian teams?! I mean each Canadian team has had sell-outs every game since the season started. I have family/friends in Manitoba and the province would go nuts to have the Jets back.
It's a no brainer, and if there isn't another Canadian squad by next season then the NHL will be in some serious trouble.

they need to get rid of about 10 teams, like anaheim, florida, and some of the other small market teams that no one cares about. and they need to add at least 4 teams in canada. the nhl has to realize where their market is and they have to adapt the league to that.
there are way too many teams and not enough support in most of the areas, so it has to change if they want to get some money in the league.

Teams like: Nashville, Atlanta, Florida, Anaheim, Columbus, Washington, Phoenix, and others need to die for the sake of the league. Winnipeg and Halifax (maybe) need teams and so does maybe Quebec City.

pens blank the rangers 1-0 and make up some ground in the standings. Fleury was lookin real good tonight, although he was lucky with two ranger shots off the pipe. I think the pens are really shakin off the offseason ust and startin to click now. that's four in a row boys...

Rangers down the Devils 2-0. Shutout for lundqvist, dawes had both goals. This was a key game to win to stop the skid as well as gain some pride against a rival. Also funny to note a former ranger defenseman was responsible for the game winning goal...that's what you get for going to play for the enemy!
Coyotes won a squeaker too vs the Ducks. 1-0 at anneheim. both teams looked solid, ducks just couldn't finish and took some bad penalties which while not directly affecting the score, prevented them from mountain a sustained offense.

yea since all they do is cheap hits. jones's hit was not cheap. it was just unlucky because bergeron hit the ledge right below the glass. they were both going for the puck and jones pushed him.
and he was awake most of the time. they said he was fine and could move all of his body shortly after they took him off
once again, if u know what your talking about, then dont say anything and dont make stuff up....
i guarantee that you have not watched a single flyers game all season

which is why there should be more teams in canada. you have a channel for a hockey team. where i live, the only way to see a hockey game is the local comcast sportsnet, and the only way you have that is if you use comcast (i believe). well besides the occasional game on versus
cause way way way more canadians watch hockey then americans, most of which is because americans most americans are taught to love baseball and football when they are kids, which is not the case for hockey, while it is the opposite in canada.

So, Ottawa 10-1-0...
Can't believe they signed Spezza for $49 million over 7 seasons... He definately hasn't shown that much potential to be earning $7 mil a season yet.
Good thing is Ottawa has locked up so many good players, we're gonna be top contenders for more than a few years to come.

3rd dangerous play? i've only seen one.....Boulerice's croscheck. the Downie hit was an absolute textbook seek and destroy, clean, killer bodycheck. Randy Jone's hit, a beauty, but Bergeron just turned. When you get to NHL you should know better than to go in the way he did.

Your right Brodeur is off to a bad start...
Can't argue with stats though he is the best there is consistantly over the time he's been around.
Man, You guys have no sense of what's a good hit.....
You scream bloody murder whenever someone gets hit. That's why American hockey isn't half of what Candain Hockey is.

there are cheap hits in football every 3 minutes and no one complains about that. but as soon as there is a big hit in hockey, everyone complaining.
and brodeur is just getting older and has a much worse defense then he has ever had. its just a bunch of bad things happening at once. last year was his last great season. he will be average or below from now on

brodeur is now the 3rd best goalie in the tri-state area...with henriik lundqvist and rick dipietro ahead of him
brodeur was an outstanding goalie...but he is old and not nearly what he used to be ..
i am a big rangers fan and hope that the win tonight against the pens....who are too young to go anywhere this season
you need a mix of savvy-vets and young talent like the rangers have
although crosby might turn out to be one of the best players in all of hockey

i disagree. dipietro is not near the level of brodeur.. yet.
he is 2 years into a 15 YEAR contract they are obviously trying to develop him and he is not developed yet.
give him 3 years and then we will talk

i will give you, that the pens are probably the youngest teams in hockey. but they do have a handful of good veterans on their team. gary roberts, mark recchi, brooks orpik, even peter sykora is a seasoned player. the atlantic division seems up for grabs, but i think the pans can at least pull a wild card berth out of the season. and sidney crosby is already one of the best players (talent-wise) in the NHL.

i do agree sydney crosby is one of the best players in all of hockey....but when you have vets like gary roberts making penaltys like last night when he got a double minor against avery...that doesnt help very much....i do think they will make a playoff birth again but will not be in contention for the atlantic.....and for dipietro he is still developing but i still thnk he is better for this season...if i needed one big game win i would take broduer but for a season i would take dipietro no question

this is the 7th year of the build dipietro plan, maybe by 2021 he'll be as good as bordeur was in his 7th NHL campaign. See if NHL GM's had solid heads on their shoulders they would relise that you have to give goaltenders atleast a year to develope in the AHL, a FULL year. Not the half and half, its killed fleury (who has always been meh BTW) and dipietro. Guys like Carey Price and Justin Pogge will be solid tenders in the NHL in the next 3 years, why? Because they were alotted time to grow and get ready for the NHL. hell price even won a calder dup. Although there are guys who spend their whole careers in the AHL(telleqvist for example), Those are rarely top round draft picks.
Guys like Avery should not be allowed to play in the NHL. We arent in the clutch and grab era anymore so these guys have no point. Ti Dumbey hung up his skates because he knew his one and only job was no longer needed. now dont get me wrong there is a place in the game for guys like Bouggart, whose job it is to protect the stars and his team mates. But guys like Belak, Neal, Mcgratton, Brasheir, and Avery who have little to no stick skills and fighting talent have no place in the game.
Bergeron has himself and only himself to blame for his injury, if your protecting the puck properly there shouldnt be room for a guy to push(cause thats all it was) you into the boards hard enough to cause a serious injury. How ever i do agree
