Our club has tried various tryout formats for player placement. I would be interested in hearing how other people are approaching this. Do you use drills, scrimmage, or combinations of both? How many tryout sessions do you conduct? What type of evaluation forms do you use? Do you use some type of formal score of the players?

practically all of the tryouts i have been to have gone down like this: everyone is given a jersey with a number, and you give the person a score from like 1-10 within the certain category you are doing. they usually consist of drills where the coaches can actually see you play in game type situations. like 6v5 1v1 scrimmage etc.

Each year, we give out the numbers, run them through drills to check athleticism & ability, then scrimmage. We rank the players by position, & go from there.... It's all about what's important to you.

My favorite thing to do is give a kid 1 on 1 advice to do something wrong, just to see if they'll do it. If they do, they're coachable, & I'll tell them not to do that again, but good job.

On my latest tryout that I went to, the coaches there gave us pinnies. We did a warm up which consisted of a lap and then streches. The goalies were then pulled aside to for warm up while the players did drills.

They then had the goalies involved in drills to see how goalies could react and how well offense played against defense and vise versa.

After those were done, we played scrimmages where coaches would let us play but ask referees to redo something (like face offs) so they could see how well that person could react.
