I found a story on Yahoo! about a 6 yr old girl who recently died of brain cancer. Following her death, her parents began finding little notes (like small little pictures of hearts and crayon drawings of her parents and such) tucked in the nooks and crannies of the house, left behind for her parents to see. With these notes, the parents have put them all together in a little booklet called "Notes Left Behind" which they are selling and have started a fund for the finding the cure for pediatric brain cancer. Normally, this would be a nice little story to read and feel good about.

But here's the catch, I scrolled down to see the comments, and instead of the expected "wow, that's amazing, good for that girl", nearly all the comments are calling shenanigans, saying the parents made the notes up to sell the book and make some cash off their dead daughter. So I just wanted to get you guys' opinion on this. Is this story real? Or just a horribly sad case of greed?

ya, that's what I'm talking about. Some of the comments have no evidence to back them up, they just say stuff like "this is fake, totally fake". But after I read that 10th comment I began to realize it actually could be a hoax and thus, posted here.

Agreed it does sound reasonable.

Fake or not the book is making money for The Cure Starts Now which is a non-profit organization dedicated to finding a cure for pediatric brain cancer. Its for a great cause even if this is all a hoax.

yea but the parents not cleaning once in like 200 and some days. and comment 10 seems like they know whats going on. but then again anyone that has common sense could tell you that you cant give somebody with brain cancer a certain amount of time to live.

to me it seems fake but hey,its still for a good cause.

Doctors do know these types of things.
http://www.merck.com/mmhe/sec01/ch008/ch008b.html

Its rare because not many doctors share this information with people. He/She may not have said 135 days, but maybe 4 months. It may not be accurate, but they have an idea.

This sounds like one of those cases that you want to believe in so badly, but you can obviously see through it. Sad. If it is true, great, if not, the proceeds are still going to charity.

This story just seems to fishy, the Elena Desserich story seems like a HOAX. I HOPE it goes to a good cause, but the wording on their website is very specific saying only that "US author profits" go to the charity. Here are more fishy things:

1. Money.
-> The "Notes Left Behind" Website only states that US author profits go to the charity. The book is currently printed in 13 languages, sold around the world and already sold 150,000 pre-sale copies before its Oct 27 release date (http://www.mahalo.com/elena-desseric...nd#cite_note-3). Even with modest author royalties, overseas sales could easily account for at several hundred thousand dollars.

2. Hundreds of notes were found.
-> hundreds? she was very sick; sounds like a full time job making hundreds of notes and hide them.

3. The parents did not find one note before.
-> did they not clean their house for 3 months and 6 weeks?

4. Nobody knew she was making/hiding notes.
->You'd think that if she was diagnosed with cancer, the parents or someone would be spending almost every moment with her. No one saw her making and hiding hundreds of notes.

5. Elena was 6 yrs old.
-> Emotional Maturity. A 6-yr old would have trouble comprehending death, let alone their own death, or their parents lives after their own death. Though a 10-yr old might comprehend this, a 6-year old does not have this emotional maturity.

6. According to the Dad doctors "said" she had 3 months and 6 weeks to live.
-> As a former RN, I find this prognosis very unlikely, doctors are far more likely to say "less than 6 months." A doctor would never know exactly how many days. Even if the chemo lasts for a certain time, there is no guarantee anyone will survive chemo and many don't.

While this story is tragic because an innocent child died, it is unbelievable that a sick child could make "hundreds" of letters, unknown to anyone and hide them all, unknown to anyone, while incredibly sick.

Does it really matter if the notes are fake or not? It all goes to a great cause, so what's the big deal?
