I've got a group of brand new HS players, mostly 9th graders, but all are picking up the sport for the first time. I've got an hour a day to work with them, but school rules are no pads and obviously no contact. Sticks and balls only.

I'm teaching the basics of passing, catching, cradling, ground balls, etc. and we're doing a lot of wall ball, line drills, hamster drill, and relay races for cradling. The problem is that it's getting old, and I'm looking for some new activities that I can do without contact that will teach the fundamentals of the game.

Any ideas out there?

Hamster Drill, not familiar with that one?

It doesn't relate to the actual game play much, but playing basically ultimate frisbee with lacrosse sticks works pretty well. It lets people get used to passing and moving around other folks with sticks. Non-contact, and good exercise too.

Probably my personal favorite was to play basketball. Instead of dribbling you have cradling,You can do a jump ball like they do in women's lacrosse, or even a normal face off. To keep from breaking the backboards, we required all shots to be straight in the hoop, anything off the glass didn't count. If they're wearing gloves you can allow LIGHT stick checking to try to get the ball, but stress positional defense and shutting down the passing lanes. If no gloves, then no stick checking.

Hamster drill is a line drill alternative:

Make groups of three, Each with two balls. Each group forms a straight line about 30 yards long. The player at each end starts with a ball. Player on one end passes to player in the middle, who catches and throws it back, then turns around and repeats the process with the other player. Continue for 1 minute, then switch positions. Repeat with left hand, over the shoulder, ground balls, etc.

It's called the hamster drill because the player in the middle is running back and forth towards his partners at every catch, like a hamster on a wheel.

Don't understand why no helmets. We won't let our kids play wall ball or have a catch without helmets on. You ever see the damage a lacrosse ball can do to a face?
